Food of the Week – Beetroot

This week we’re keeping to the category of vegetables and putting the spotlight on….BEETROOT. We all know that vegetables are super important in a balanced diet, but are also critical when looking at athletes and performance benefits. But did you know that beetroot juice can boost performance?

Beetroots contain nitrates, which act as a vasodilator meaning it increases the diameter of blood vessels around the body resulting in increased oxygen flow. This can aid in an increased amount of blood flow and oxygen being supplied to skeletal muscles, which is super handy when looking at increasing your performance as an athlete. It’s also beneficial for the average person as this effect on blood vessels also can occur to other vessels in the body e.g. the gallbladder, which can help increase the flow of bile, helping us break down fats easier.

If you’re a first timer to beetroot, make sure you start slow e.g. start with ¼ or ½ beetroot per day and slowly build to 1-2 per day to allow your body, but particularly your digestive tract to slowly adjust.
