IRISH DANCE: MOSTABILITY
2017 has been full of exciting opportunities at Everything’s Connected. One which included being given the opportunity to work with Irish Dancers. Typically, when one thinks of Irish Dancing all our attention is focused on what the lower half of the body is doing, whilst the top half gets forgotten about. It is here in the upper half that I believe lies one of the major factors separating a good from a great Irish Dancer. The core strength and control that is required to maintain the ideal upright, upper body is intense and therefore can’t be forgotten about. One of the links to this core is the thoracic spine, also known as the upper to mid spine, which has a structural relationship to the important muscles that control this posture. By using the principle of gravity, we can turn on the core using upper body drivers to achieve increased mobility in this part of the spine at the same time as teaching the core and body to stabilise and control this motion. As coined by Gary Gray, essentially we are working on mostability; mobility and stability at the same time, which when incorporated at the right time in a dancers treatment and training plan, is a step closer to function.
