Food Of The Week- Sardines

Today’s ‘Food Of The Week’ we’re talking about sardines. Though some may be deterred away from eating these smelly guys, we really need to love them as they are packed full of nutritional benefits to help our body! These small fish are one of the safest fish on the planet with their low mercury level. They are packed full of essential- fatty acids, which is a fat subcategory that is integral to our body function. Our bodies can’t produce essential fats, therefore it’s vital we obtain these from our diet, with sardines being one of the important sources for obtaining omega- 3. There are numerous benefits of omega- 3 fatty acids, one being its anti-inflammatory properties, which can help with numerous conditions such as arthritis, heart disease and inflammatory conditions affecting the gut, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

Sardines are also packed full of vitamin D, which is an important bone- builder and a nutrient that is difficult to obtain from our diet as it’s not as readily available compared to other vitamins. Vitamin D is essential to our bone health as it helps to increase the absorption of calcium.
