Food of the Week – Bone Broth

This week’s food of the week is more like a recipe of the week. Bone broth is an old-fashioned remedy, which we have started rediscovering in our modern world. The benefits of bone broth are endless, but for today’s blog, I’m going to concentrate around how this superfood is an integral component to the management of osteoarthritis, which is a very common presentation we see here at Everything’s Connected.

Amongst the long list of minerals and vitamins packed in bone broth, it’s full of collagen, which we get from gelatine when we cook the bones. It’s this collagen, which is full of amino acids, which are the building blocks to proteins. Amino acids such as proline and glycine, which are found in bone broth are helpful building blocks to help our body’s replenish and rebuild important joint soft tissues.

You would have heard that glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate are helpful components to keeping our cartilage healthy as it’s a popular supplement that is recommended for arthritis suffers. It has been documented in recent studies that consuming glucosamine chondroitin from cartilage e.g. bone broth, is more effected for decreasing osteoarthritis pain compared to taking the extracted version in a pill form. You can find a link to a study highlighting this at the bottom of this blog.
