Food Of The Week- Blueberries

This week’s food of the week, we’re talking about blueberries! These small little guys are packed full of antioxidants, which help protect our body from unstable molecules and free radicals that can damage the structure of our cells. Did you know that blueberries have the highest antioxidant capacity out of all the common fruits and vegetables?

This antioxidant capacity also helps stop oxidized LDL (the bad cholesterol) from occurring, which is a process that occurs in heart disease. A research article in The Journal Of Nutrition, found that a daily dose of 50 grams of blueberries lowered obese participant’s LDL oxidation levels by 27% after an eight- week period.

A common thought amongst patients is the fear that eating fruit isn’t good for us as it contains high amounts of sugar. Though this is partly true, what most people forget are all the other components that mother nature has combined in this food source such as important vitamins. Fruit also contains lots of fiber, which helps our body digest and uptake the sugar in fruit slower compared to if we disrupt this food package by for example juicing our fruit instead. Blueberries however are special as they are moderate in sugar compared to other fruits. One of the components it contains is a pigment called anthocyanins, which actually has beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, therefore having anti- diabetic effects.

So the next time you’re making a smoothie or looking for a snack, have a good hand- cupped serving of blueberries!
