Food of the week – Avocado
In the past, we have been taught to be scared of fat, but not all fat is bad! Avocados are a fantastic source of unsaturated fat, but they also provide our bodies with essential fatty acids (omega 6 and 9). Essential = meaning we can’t live without them. Our bodies can’t make these forms of fat, which is why we must get them from our diet. One important role of these omega fats is combating inflammation, which is one of the reasons we absolutely love these guys at Everything’s Connected as part of our nutrition prescription for our chronic pain patients. Chronic pain is associated with persistent, low- grade inflammation. Avocados are one of the best anti-inflammatory foods and depending on the patient can be incorporated into a well- balanced, whole food diet to help with treatment and reducing pain associated with inflammation.
The healthy fats found in avocado also have amazing benefits to your heart health as they lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL (the good ones). We know that reducing these bad cholesterol levels are linked to reducing your risk of heart attacks and strokes.
A handy tip I just discovered that the benefits aren’t just limited to the flesh of the avocado, but also the pit! I usually throw this away but have been told you can blend the raw pit into a smoothie, which will provide all the avocado nutrient benefits as well as adding a creaminess to the texture. A whole pit will serve four.
