FOOD OPTIONS AT THE AIRPORT by Dr Shaani Marguccio.

I’m extremely lucky that I have the opportunity to travel in my job, visiting Sydney once a month to treat the dancers at Fiona- Gaye Moore Academy. One of the challenges I face however is being confronted with the limited healthy options available at the Airport food- court, particularly when you’re starving, coming straight from a day’s work and being surrounded by the temptation of fast food options. It’s in these moments that I have to practise what I preach to my patients and resist the temptation to be bad, particularly when I know I’m going into a weekend of work, where I need my mind to be sharp. It’s amazing that there really are only two options when looking for a healthy dinner option at the airport, which includes either a salad or sushi. It’s no wonder we live in a world where we find it difficult to adhere to a healthy, whole food diet when our willpower is constantly challenged, particularly at vulnerable times where we’re tired, emotional or just plain bored.

So what do I find helps this?

I’m definitely not one with strong willpower, so for me, the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ motto works. But when I find myself in situations such as at the airport I always try to reflect and think before going for the impulse purchase. You definitely need to live and treat yourself, but timing is everything! If I know I’m going into a situation where I need my mind and body to be in top shape, this will always drive me towards choosing the best food options. However, in those times that I know I can have a break from my busy schedule, I’ll definitely treat myself. I just have to make sure I don’t back that treat up with consecutive days of not so great eating or else my body will definitely tell me it’s not happy.

Yours in health,

Shaanika Marguccio
