Balance

When looking at the different components that influence a patient’s pain we’re usually quick to make sure it’s not a flexibility or a lack of strength primarily influencing that patient. But what about balance? More and more in the Everything’s Connected clinic, I’ve noticed that a lack of balance or coordination can be a primary factor or a strategy you can initially focus on improving to further enhance biomechanics and the musculoskeletal system.

My most recent session with dancer Louise Hewitt from the O’Connor School of Irish Dancing focused on this concept as we had fun changing her environment to challenge her balance. One of Louise’s treatment goals was to improve her dance turns. The following video highlights one of Louise’s homework exercises, which she has nicely agreed to share. We challenged Louise’s turns by using a beam while stressing her trunk stiffness, upright posture, by using a sandbell. These are fundamental components of Irish Dancing.
